Fire & Rescue Glove FAQs
1. What are firefighter gloves made of?
The materials in fire-resistant gloves need to stand up to the demanding conditions inherent in safety, extraction, and search and rescue missions. They also need to be flexible and easy to wear and use. That’s why they’re made of a combination of carefully designed materials like thermoplastic rubber (TPR), layered silicone, neoprene, and polycarbonate that are capable of withstanding the harsh conditions firefighters and first responders encounter.
2. How do you break in fire gloves?
Fire-resistant gloves are designed to be tough but flexible. That said, no matter how well they’re designed, new gloves always need breaking in. Think of fire gloves the same way you’d think of a new baseball mitt or a new pair of shoes. The best way to break them in is to use them. Break them in by wearing them around the house, while you’re doing yard work, or while driving.
3. Can you wash fire gloves?
Absolutely! Not only can you wash fire gloves, but it’s essential that you do. Properly cleaning your fire gloves on a regular basis will help increase their longevity and ability to retard flames. After all, if there is excess dirt or other material on your gloves, it could catch fire.
Here’s how to safely and thoroughly wash your fire gloves.
- Keep gloves on
- Add gentle dishwashing soap to glove palms
- Under a faucet, scrub between the fingers, top of the gloves, and then the palms of the gloves
- Rinse any soap residue from the gloves
- Hang to air dry the gloves
4. What are the best structural firefighting gloves?
Simply put, the best structural firefighting gloves are those that can handle the toughest and most demanding fire and rescue missions. They should be strong enough to withstand exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, heavy rope abrasion, and interaction with sharp metal and glass. They should also be flexible and comfortable enough to accommodate the range of motion and dexterity necessary to handle small objects and write.
5. Are Cestus gloves fireproof?
No material is 100% fireproof. “Fireproof” materials, commonly referred to as fire-retardants, are designed to be able to withstand extreme heat and significantly slow the spread of a fire. But all materials are eventually impacted by high enough heat. While no material exists that is truly fireproof, the materials used to make Cestus gloves are highly flame-resistant.
